Britain's Vodafone Group PLC , already has agreed to the government's condition that it sell assets in 22 states. Andrew Moreau, an Alltel spokesman, said the company is "looking forward to the FCC meeting scheduled for next week." Justice Department lawyers joined seven states in a lawsuit filed Thursday to block the merger, but also filed a proposed settlement that would require Verizon Wireless to divest assets in 100 markets. Without that action, the Justice Department said, the deal would hurt competition, drive up consumer prices and likely produce a lower-quality network.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled against Bernard Bilski, who wanted to patent a method for hedging against weather-related effects on businesses. Because his process did not involve a particular machine and did not physically transform anything, the court said, the process was not eligible for a patent. The court affirmed the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office 's denial of Bilski's patent, saying the agency's interpretation of the "process" was correct.

By Robert Abele October 31, 2008 Whenever actress Elizabeth Banks reads that an actor has planned his or her career, she wants to laugh. "We have no control over anything that's happening to us," Banks says, although given her cluster of new and upcoming films -- Oliver Stone's "W." just opened, Kevin Smith's profanely comic romance "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" hits theaters today, followed a week later by "Role Models" -- you'd think she was a strategic mastermind. The possible game-changer for the high-cheekboned, blond beauty who for 10 years has expertly run the woman's-role gamut of wife ("Seabiscuit"), girlfriend ("Invincible"), secretary (the " Spider-Man" films), hot pickup ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") and also-ran ("Definitely, Maybe," "The Baxter"), is this week's costarring role as Miri, a cash-strapped Pittsburgher who out of desperation agrees to produce an adult film with her similarly broke best friend, Zack, played by Seth Rogen. For Banks, the range was now all in one lead: sexy, funny, hurt, confused and smitten.

Many brothels are simply storefronts on Phnom Penh's busy streets; pimps swing open the steel doors, revealing a room with women sitting inside, waiting for clients. On a recent night while covering Cambodia, Kevin Sites was driving the streets of Phnom Penh with his local producer and noticed one such brothel. Kevin asked his driver to stop so that he could film the scene from the car window.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - In a show defined by throbbing dance music, tight choreography, spectacular stage sets and stunning visuals, perhaps the most stirring moment during the kickoff concert to Madonna's " Sticky & Sweet " tour came when the Material Girl stood onstage with just her guitar and a few musicians for an acoustic set.

Check out underwear elastic products.

Maybe that's because she knew she was right. Even the superstar's most cynical critics couldn't walk away from her two-hour extravaganza at the Izod Center on Saturday night without being thoroughly wowed. It was not only the spectacle of the concert, but the performer herself, as she reasserted her musical relevance and dominance in her 25th year in the spotlight. Madonna is not the world's most gifted singer or dancer or even musician, but she may be its greatest performer. From the moment she first appeared on stage, looking taut and chiseled in a black bra and shorts with a mesh layer overlay, she turned the arena into a massive dance club and a nonstop party. The zooming "Candy Shop," off her most recent CD "Hard Candy," set it off as Madonna strutted onstage flanked by an army of dancers. While they may have executed the show's most intricate dance moves, the ever-fit Madonna dazzled on her own with sinewy steps that belied her AARP-status.

"When we announced our advertising agreement with Yahoo! in June we agreed to delay its implementation until October to give regulators time to look at the details," Google said in an email statement Friday.

"As we are still in conversation with the Department of Justice we have agreed to a brief delay in implementing the agreement while those discussions continue." The proposed online advertising alliance could be used to show that politicians and regulators blamed for letting financial markets self-destruct are now better watching out for people's economic interests. "You hook up Google and Yahoo and you've effectively created a lockout monopoly and regulators are not going to have a good sense of humor," analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle group told AFP.

NEW YORK - Washington's financial bailout plan is now law. So the credit spigot will start flowing again, banks will resume lending, and an economic recovery can begin, right? Wrong. Experts say the most important thing that needs to happen before the $700 billion bailout even has a chance of working: Home prices must stop falling. That would send a signal to banks that the worst has passed and it's safe to start doling out money again.

See elastic strap supplier website.

The problem is the lending freeze has made getting a mortgage loan tough for everyone except those with sterling credit. That means it will take several months or longer to pare down the glut of houses built when times were good — and those that have come on the market because of soaring foreclosures — before home prices start appreciating. Housing is a critical component to the U.S. economy and by extension the availability of credit. Roughly one in eight U.S. jobs depends on housing directly or indirectly — from construction workers to bank loan officers to big brokers on Wall Street . A turnaround in housing prices would boost confidence in the wider economy and, experts hope, goad banks into lending again.

"To say that their internal links are better than anything else they could possibly link to is just ridiculous. . The discovery also likely intrigues law enforcement and intelligence agencies in other countries, because they have been bothered by the growing use of Skype, which claims 338 million users across the world.

By its very nature, Skype is difficult to wiretap. Skype routes calls and chats between computers over the Internet, avoiding traditional phone networks. And the contents are supposedly encrypted, raising concerns in law enforcement that Skype could let criminals communicate without fear of eavesdropping. The FBI has argued for applying U.S. wiretapping law to Internet phone calls. The bureau got a favorable court ruling in 2006, but it's not clear whether it applies to systems like Skype that skip telephone networks.

NEW YORK - The economic slowdown has started to squeeze the technology sector. So far this has not led to wide-scale job cuts, but a slowing demand for computers and other electronics may already be weighing on some payrolls.

Computer and electronics manufacturers did not grow their work forces at all in September, according to data released Friday by the Labor Department . In comparison, such companies added 5,100 jobs in August. Overall, U.S. employers slashed their payrolls by 159,000 in September, the most in more than five years. Many of these jobs were in manufacturing, construction, retail and financial services.
