Like her last novel, the acclaimed "Beloved," this one is built around slavery. The time and context, however, have shifted. "A Mercy" is set in the Colonies in the late 17th century, when the dehumanizing brutality of the institution was compounded by two other toxic practices. First, the men who ran the Colonies treated all women, regardless of color, as little better than animals. Chickens, geese, cattle and all manner of other creatures wander in and out of the lives and dwellings of the female characters who dominate "A Mercy," and given Morrison's penchant for earth and nature symbolism, this is hardly accidental. They're all in this together.
