DIY Netbook Linux There are a variety of netbook distros out there, but you can have a little fun creating your own.

You can chose any distro but my favourite is, of course, Ubuntu. The 9.04 release is particularly well-suited to netbooks because it not only works well on most of them, but includes the ultra-quick boot-up technology that will probably mean the desktop appears in about 25 seconds of powering-up. This removes the need to hibernate or suspend the computer each time you've finished with it, which also removes the need for a large swap partition because this is where the hibernate file is stored (my Dell Mini 9 only has a 4GB SD disk, for example, and has 2GB of RAM, so a swap partition is simply impossible). By selecting to manually partition during installation, you can avoid setting-up a swap partition and simply create one large root partition. This is extremely useful if your netbook has a small hard disk (i.e. 4GB or less). Ubuntu will warn you this is a potentially bad thing, but will let you continue. When you boot into your new installation, you can create a single swap file, just like with Windows. This will live in the root partition. Using a swap file in preference to a swap partition won't allow your computer to hibernate, but it will otherwise act just like a standard swap partition.

Otherwise known as a 3D ring or, better yet, a donut. Now in this game you are inside this donut shooting at oncoming ships and dodging oncoming barriers. It is fast, it is timed, and it is addictive.

Designed to handle e-mail, Web browsing, and some basic software apps, they are somewhat limited when compared with most full-size laptops, but how limited? I wanted to find out.

I've dug into a few dozen popular sites that I use, and made note of basic performance through extended use. Did they work? Did they not work? These were things I wanted to test. The browsers, and the OS were as lean as possible. None of the browsers was running any add-ons, or special plug-ins besides Java and the latest version of Adobe Flash. There were also no other programs running besides the Windows activity monitor.

According to Nielsen, about 2.8 million homes are completely unprepared for the transition. These viewers may be surprised on Saturday to find their TVs unable to pick up signals. The National Association of Broadcasters said the early call volumes were “low to moderate,” but the phones were busier at stations in states with high numbers of unprepared homes. In Houston, one of the least prepared markets, stations reported an average of 675 calls through early afternoon.

Dutt was sentenced to six years in 2007 for illegal possession of firearms acquired from terrorists responsible for serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993.

The National Election Watch launched an awareness campaign during the just concluded Lok Sabha elections. Did it help voters? Civil society has played its role far better this time. Lots of people came forward this election. Voters had more political awareness. The most interesting thing has been that political parties have put themselves on a pedestal, but the people have tried to pull them down. The candidates were invited to public forums and made to answer questions on their plans for the constituency, the reason they be voted for, and also on their criminal background, if any. It has never happened before. Despite this, the new Lok Sabha has 152 members with a criminal background, of which 73 have serious cases against them. What are the factors that make people vote for such candidates? People don’t want to vote for a candidate with a criminal background. But the problem is, if they are aligned to an ideology, they face a dilemma. So they continue to vote for that party’s candidates even if they have criminal cases against them. Civil society has tried very, very hard to vote for good candidates, but in some cases they didn’t have any options.

Mark Geragos, a Los Angeles attorney who represented Carradine's brother, the actor Keith Carradine, said on Saturday the family has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and filed a formal request to have the FBI contact authorities in Thailand for further information. "They've done it because of the conflicting reports and the nature of those reports that have given the family great pause," Geragos told Reuters.

A speech as publicised and eagerly awaited as US President Barack Obama’s keynote address at Cairo University on Thursday was bound to be built on the tension between setting the bar high and the prospect of failure and consequent disappointment. Obama succeeded in Cairo; not through rhetoric, not through avoidance of significant fault lines. His success lay in a fine touch; in a speech utterly realistic, but with an idealistic sweep. In seeking the common ground of “mutual interest and mutual trust” between America and the Muslim world, in urging to break mutual stereotypes, Obama’s speech itself was “a new beginning” in that this “dialogue” was long-needed and long-awaited, given the intractable differences steadily entrenched over the last eight years. On the key issues of violent extremism, Israel-Palestine, nuclear weapons, democracy, religious tolerance, women’s rights and economic progress, Obama’s ace was the juxtaposition of the historical context against the current one to admire and solicit understanding, to remind all of their duties. This was visible with regard to Israel-Palestine, extremism, or Iran and the nuclear threat. The speech was a careful balancing act, with an encompassing worldview that moved from the personal to the universal, with a calibrated toughening of tone on problem areas. That Obama didn’t apologise for but acknowledged US mistakes (such as the overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected government in 1953), that he refused to blame his predecessor but indicated how his administration would be different was just as well, for he spoke from a position of authority, an authority he needs. America’s soft power should do what its military prowess could not, and Obama is doing a lot on the ground — in Iraq and Afghanistan, on torture, in offering Iran talks, in wanting to deal directly with Israel-Palestine. Yet, it’s a fact that even liberal Iranians can be ill-disposed towards America, and clearly there’s a long way to go.
