President Obama 's White House health-care summit, it's clear that both sides are certain they are right on substance. Where they differ is over the politics. Democrats and Republicans believe that, in the end, they can win the political argument. As Obama said at the end of Thursday's gathering, "That's what elections are for." Thursday's largely civil and intelligent summit underscored the deep philosophical gulf that remains between the two sides over health care (and many other issues). Both agree that the health-care system needs repair but significantly disagree over how to fix it. That is a genuine difference that seven hours of talking did not begin to narrow. Democrats think more government is the answer; Republicans say the opposite, that market competition is the best antidote to the ailing system. Republicans are focused on cost, both rising premiums and government expenditures. They haven't made universal coverage anything close to a priority. Democrats are more determined to expand coverage to many millions more who lack insurance. But they say they have not ignored costs. Their proposals, they argue, would reduce premiums and the deficit. Republicans say the projected governmental savings will never be realized.

Well, I think I’ve already stated my opinion on vote splitting between the top 12 females, and Janell was the first (but not the last) casualty to this incredibly common voting result. Janell was certainly a weak link with her tepid performance of a Heart classic, and her voice wasn’t powerful enough to do the number justice. This shouldn’t have been that much of a shock to anyone. At first I thought Janell might squeak through because she is a very attractive woman, but then I took a step back and realized, this year the vast majority of the girls are very attractive women. So, goodbye, Janell. Maybe next time you pick out an actual pair of jeans and not tights that simply look like jeans.

of the server market in the fourth quarter of 2009, X64 servers and blades in particular were singled out as the growth engines. With IDC's similar, but different, report Thursday we learn that the Windows platform was the real beneficiary of the bump in sales.

IDC tracks factory revenues by the server manufacturers, while Gartner tracks revenues that add vendor and reseller sales together. So their numbers are never quite the same. But they are similar, and they track. Gartner talks about sales by X64, RISC, and Itanium processors, while IDC looks at server sales by the primary operating system deployed on the boxes. IDC also gives a breakdown of sales by server price band (volume, midrange, and enterprise), and talks a bit about the X64 market and blades. By using both sets of publicly available data, you get the best sense of what is going on with servers short of paying Gartner and IDC the big bucks the vendor community does.

Despite a substantial gain reaped from the 13th Finance Commission’s recommendations, the states are trying to come together to demand a much higher share of tax revenue from the Centre. Asim Dasgupta, chairman of empowered committee of the state finance ministers, indicated they might revive the ‘conclave politics’ of the 1980s. The committee will meet in the first week of April to discuss this and then place its demands before Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The meeting with the Union minister had already been fixed, he informed.

Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) India

From the estimates made by Dasgupta, West Bengal stands to gain substantially from the awards and recommendations of the 13th Finance Commission. Its total award of tax and grant for the next five years will be Rs 1,17,000 crore, compared to Rs 51,000 crore awarded by the 12th Finance Commission. Yet, the award falls much short of the “states’ requirement and expectations,’’ as there has been a marginal increase of 1.5 per cent of the tax share from its present 30.5 per cent to 32 per cent. All states individually and then through the empowered committee of state finance ministers demanded the tax share be raised to 50 per cent, and this was placed before the Finance Commission on September 16, 2008. “There is a mismatch between the responsibility and revenue share. The states have to bear 80 per cent or more responsibility in discharging development activities, and yet, the Centre takes two-third of the total tax collection,” observed Dasgupta. Sates want it to be raised to 50 per cent.

Stanly Johny Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary innings against South Africa might have occupied most of the front-page space of every newspaper Thursday, leaving Mamata Banerjee’s Rail Budget to a corner, but the celebratory mood over the maestro’s iconic double century should not discourage us from taking a critical look at the Budget Banerjee presented in Parliament.

Latest news for ashley furniture

Now that the proposals and the minister’s future plans for the Railways are out in the open, as a routine the Congress, the ruling party, has welcomed the Budget, while the Left, Mamata’s bête noire, and the BJP, her former ally but now opposition, have criticised it. The key feature of the Budget, as the media have already reported, is the minister’s decision to hold the fares and freight charges. She even cut the freight rate of some essential commodities -- grains and kerosene – keeping in mind the rising food inflation. This was widely expected. Though the Planning Commission had recommended a revision of the fares to streamline the railway’s revenues, Banerjee, already in an election- mood for the Left-controlled West Bengal, avoided biting the bullet. Speaking to reporters at the Rail Bhavan before the Budget presentation, Banerjee used the famous Lincoln quote to express her “generosity” towards the public: “Railways is of the people, by the people and for the people,” said an upbeat Banerjee, dressed in white cotton sari and with a cream shawl over her shoulders.

Wednesday night, we got our first real look into all of the dudes of American Idol Season 9. I was hoping they were all going to blow it out of the water, but it didn't happen.  I was really disappointed at all the song choices the ladies brought to the stand on Tuesday. At least last night, the guys made much better choices.

The night started with Todrick Hall, whom I had high hopes for.  He's a great performer, knows his stage and can sing. He did his own funky version of Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone , and it was a good first look.  The arrangement was kinda weird, but the band was lovin' it. Judges weren't feelin' the version however and hoped he would bring it harder next week. Me, too. Aaron Kelly sang Rascal Flatts' Here Comes Goodbye .  This kid's voice is super pure, and I really dug this performance, actually. Simon Cowell gave one of his best and well spoken critiques: I was happy for Aaron. This kid could be a contender if he believes in himself.

A base salary of 31,040 euros per year was punched in, based on the EC's Eurostat figures for 2006. The results came to an estimated total value for the Linux kernel version 2.6.30 (released in December 2009) of 1,025,553,430 euros. About 985 developers would be needed over a span of just under 14 years, the researchers claim.

However, the budget is not without vision either. By taking into account the present delicate economic scenario of the country, the passenger and freight fares were not raised. In fact, the freight fares were lowered by Rs.100 per wagon for food grains and kerosene. Banerjee announced a number of projects in the Budget, for which finance is still a question mark. She justified these projects by asking, “Should commercial viability be the only criterion to judge this need of connectivity? Or, should social responsibility be an important consideration? I prefer the latter. Our objective is inclusive growth.” Banerjee ruled out complete privatization, but said that the PPP-model (Private Public Partnership model) is the need of the hour. However, she clarified that Railways would remain a government organization.

Forget right or left or any matters of ideology. Why not make the pressing public issue about logic, perspective, rationality, proportion, and even humor? There ought to be a new political test: If you talk like a nut, if you act like a nut, if you associate with other nuts, you’re a nut.

News and website for ashley home furniture

Joe Stack’s daughter, Samantha Bell, is, like her father, who flew his plane into the IRS office in Austin, Texas, last week, a nut. His suicide and murder of an innocent bystander was, according to Bell, her father’s way of speaking out against injustice. “Nothing will ever be accomplished,” she said, if there aren’t people like her father willing to strike a blow against big government (she also called him a hero, but then, as nuttily, thought better of that and retracted it). In no time at all, Joe Stack could become part of the discussion about the evils of Washington. Many reasonable people may shortly be engaged in a Joe Stack-inspired debate about the virtues or ills of big government. This is partly out of a certain politesse: We think it’s unfair or incorrect or plainly not nice to call people cuckoo, daft, deficient, around the bend. Political debate, I’d argue, is quite often a way to avoid the real subject. The very impersonal and humorless nature of political discussions—so that even in the privacy of our own homes we can sound like talking heads—means we overlook the real emotional subtext: Many American are truly out-and-out over the edge. (Arguably, the more you talk about politics the more distant you are from your emotions and, hence, the nuttier you are.) And the problem keeps getting worse.

Servers , 22nd February 2010 15:25 GMT IBM has launched a new Xeon-based blade server for BladeCenter boxes that it says is tuned specifically to support virtualization hypervisors that in turn run virtual Linux or Windows instances.

Post to multiple blogs here.

What IBM means mostly is that the box has gobs of memory and fast and small flash drives for storage. The single-wide, full-height HS22V blade has 18 DDR3 main memory slots, meaning it can support up to 144 GB for a two-socket Xeon 5500 blade. The Xeon 5500, also known as the "Gainestown" quad-core processor in the Nehalem-EP family of chips, was launched last March and is about to be refreshed with a six-core "Westmere-EP" variant that should provide roughly 50 per cent more oomph. But IBM has to sell what is on the X64 truck today, and the HS22V will no doubt sport Westmere-EP processors (presumably to be called the Xeon 5600s) before too long to match its large main memory.

Whither Linux drivers? - Techgoondu

Linux users are often at the mercy of hardware vendors when it comes to device drivers. The open source community often needs to turn to reverse engineering to churn out drivers from proprietary ones. As long as the majority of hardware is made for Windows and OS X machines, Linux users will need to wait until the community figures out the nuts and the bolts of a piece of hardware before a Linux driver can be written.

Manage multiple blog posts here.

Take Nouveau for example. The open source project started in 2006 with the aim of building high quality drivers for Nvidia graphics cards. Although Nvidia provided a Linux driver several years ago, it was a basic driver with no 3D support. The Nouveau project gained momentum and a year later, its driver soon outperformed Nvidia’s in 2D performance. While some Linux drivers can be as good as proprietary ones from hardware vendors, others only allow basic functionality with sometimes abysmal performance. My interest in Linux was rekindled recently when I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my three-year-old Macbook. The basic hardware like the keyboard and graphics worked right out of the box after the installation, with the exception of the iSight webcam which only worked after I installed a software that reverse engineered the right driver out of Apple’s proprietary iSight driver.

It is perfectly understandable. Denied any flexibility in manoeuvring members of his Cabinet, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is doing the best he can by reinventing his personal Cabinet, a collection of personally chosen eminent personae given assignments from the PM’s priority list.

News and website ashley sofas

Singh can do nothing to Cabinet colleagues because the current law of coalition politics says that once you are seated in a particular chair, only an election defeat can drag you out of it. Competence, performance or even interest in your job has nothing to do with your continuance. DMK supremo’s son Alagiri has around zero interest in his Cabinet job, and does not care who knows this. His real ambition is to succeed his father as chief minister of Tamil Nadu, a legacy currently assigned to his brother Stalin. A Cabinet member is meant to be part of a team, and implement a collective decision even if he is personally opposed to it. His politicisation of an important pre-Budget decision, to lift a key fertiliser subsidy, would have been sufficient for dismissal in any normal Cabinet system of governance. The prime minister could do nothing about it since the DMK functions as an autonomous ally. Gradually, through a creep-and-collect process, the prime minister has used his rights of appointment to his personal office to create a parallel mini-administration that can address those aspects of the national agenda that he is most interested in. This is not quite the Kitchen Cabinet of the Indira Gandhi days, when a core group of personal favourites functioned as a super Cabinet, arguing the merits and demerits of a particular policy before it was presented to an obedient full Cabinet. The prime minister’s men do not intervene, or interfere, in ministries outside their domain, as the Kitchen Cabinet would. But if the prime minister has made any project his own, then the relevant ministry has to understand that there is a higher authority and it is called the PMO.

Novell have transferred their Linux warfare to the cloud. As both companies seek to use their open source history to advantage on the web platform by spouting standard mantras about avoiding vendor lock-ins and low cost, they have also taken different approaches on other counts when taking their cloud services to market.

Red Hat is full of idealistic enthusiasm about innovation, progress and being open through and through. It has always been a vociferous proponent of open standards and Open content that is hundred percent free from licensing or royalty payments and has been singing along the same tunes on cloud. It has been up in arms with Microsoft on many issues including opposing the approval of Microsoft Office Open XML by the International Organization for Standardization. Novell on the other hand has leveraged its Microsoft partnership beautifully for many years. It claims to hold an advantage in terms of vendor interoperability in mixed-source environments comprising of both Open source and Proprietary platforms. This is mainly thanks to of course its Microsoft alliance which allows for Novell’s technology to seamlessly integrate with Windows servers and related networks. The partnership has also worked in Novell’s favor to reduce cloud deployment costs while Microsoft wages its proxy war against Red Hat through Novell’s SUSE Linux. Novell has more recently earned headlines making noises about Cloud security. Novell won big last week. Following the UK Government’s recently revamped IT policy promoting open source usage and cloud computing, National Health Service , the publicly funded Health care System in England has extended a networking deal worth around £6 million with Novell encompassing IT security, storage and remote workload management. Novell has been propagating the idea of unified security and IT management service over physical, virtual and cloud environments since December and calls it Intelligent Workload Management . The NHS agreement is a good indication that its new service realignment is working.

The crucial meeting of the BJP’s national council in Indore has set the agenda for the party both in terms of who will get positions of prominence in future and the core issues. A seemingly confident party president Nitin Gadkari sent out a message to the cadres that functioning will be more broad-based thereby implying that the days of coterie politics are over. However, time will tell whether he will be able to contain the all-powerful coterie owing allegiance to L.K. Advani.

The mega conclave acted as a unifier to an extent but, at the same time, the filmi touch provided by Gadkari’s rendering of a popular song of the 70s took away from its seriousness. At one level, the BJP looked like a party of stage performers. The party’s desire to get to the core issues was reflected in the president’s reference to the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and also how the saffron brigade has to keep up with the changing times. Significantly, Advani’s relevance to the party seemed to have diminished despite his attempts to assert his supremacy by repeatedly referring to his role over the years and making Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley leaders of the Opposition. He expressed a desire to take “leave” but at the same time said that he will continue to be a rath yatri, meaning that he was not going to retire from active politics.

The robust result for “Shutter Island” validates Paramount’s decision in August to abandon the film’s initial release date of Oct. 2, though a marketing campaign was already well under way. The delay irritated fans and knocked the film out of contention for the 2009 Academy Awards.

There was a time when the term slash and burn brought to mind a form of shifting cultivation practised from ancient times. In the past two decades, with the ascendance of majoritarian politics in India, the term has exemplified a trajectory of political opportunism characterised by a virulent aesthetic of violence in public space — especially in the cultural terrain.

Most recently we saw Shiv Sainiks foam at the mouth in an attempt to stop the release of Shah Rukh Khan's film “My name is Khan” for his ‘anti-national' statement ruing the omission of Pak cricketers for the current IPL season (and blast the effrontery of the punchline, ‘My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist). Some months ago, the MNS successfully extracted an apology from film producer Karan Johar for the ‘insult' caused to Marathi manoos pride in the film “Wake Up Sid” by the mere mention of Mumbai as Bombay. Charring canvases, vandalising artistic spaces and institutions of excellence, disrupting film and theatre performances or targeting individual artistes is part of the energetic occupational description. And just as an artist, filmmaker or writer can get inspiration from any source, these practitioners have the felicity of claiming any artistic act as being injurious enough to a particular identity, ‘tradition', gaurav (pride) or asmita to warrant mob action in its demand for apologies, amendments to the creative work or straight bans.

My thoughts on why businesses and individuals need to start thinking about switching away from proprietary and commercial software, and look at open source and free software instead.

Manage multiple blog entries here.

apexwm It's been said over and over again, that Linux is one of the most secure operating systems today. And, it's been proven over and over that it is quite secure. Knowing this, there's no surprise that Linux has been chosen as the primary platform for our most critical applications and appliances. How many appliances do you know of that run Windows? I have yet to see a single one. I think not only is Linux far superior with security, but it is not as bloated as Windows and is far more adaptable for appliances and many many specialized applications. Late last fall, the U.S. Department of Defense issued a memorandum regarding the use of open source software. In this memorandum, many points about open source software were brought up, basically praising the use of open source in mission critical applications. Some main points were brought up in this document: - Open Source software is globally developed, which in turn allows quick and efficient elimination of software defects, thus promoting more secure software.

I have been on the progressive side of the aisle virtually my whole life (being around a lot of Republicans in Nebraska, I did flirt with being a Republican when I was eight years old, but fortunately my older brother and sister talked me out of that quickly), but I have always believed that conservatives in American history had an honorable tradition in part. Yes, they have the pro-slavery, anti-women's suffrage, and Great Depression inducing Republicans in their midst, but they also had honorable patriots like John Adams and Everett Dirksen. Modern-day conservatives, however, have decided to throw the honorable part of conservatism under the bus along with every other sentiment that might get in their way.

Hudson said the aim is to simplify the experience of using a computer for those people who are annoyed or frustrated at their experience of IT. "We're targeting the disenfranchised people — we think there are 10 to 12 million of them — and the six million frustrated people," Hudson said. "It gives people who have been alienated or are scared of computers the chance to find out what they've been missing." At first sight, the Greek financial crisis poses serious problems for Greece, for the euro, and possibly for the status and standing of the European Union. The data are bleak. The GDP fell by 0.8 per cent in the last quarter of 2009, following slides of one, 0.3, and 0.5 per cent respectively in the previous three quarters; the government's own prediction of a 2010 slide of 0.3 per cent is widely considered an underestimate. The crisis has already had an impact, with the euro falling to $1.35 at one point, and all 16 eurozone countries face further falls through sales of the euro. The ratings agency Standard and Poor has downgraded the Greek sovereign debt. That makes the country's recent €2.5 billion three-month debt sale risky, as it implies Athens's lack of confidence in its own longer-term economic future. As for the EU, its rules allow bailouts only over specific projects, and it wants IMF help to be the last resort. France and Germany have expressed support, but privately accept that the eurozone might need to do more.

Click here for Elastic straps are available in almost every color, shape and size ....

Closer analysis, however, shows a much more politically loaded picture. Prime Minister George Papandreou has pointed out that the crisis is largely the making of the previous conservative government. Secondly, the Chief Economist of the European Central Bank, Jürgen Stark, has confirmed that Athens manipulated economic statistics for years, which the EU's own monitoring procedures missed. Chancellor Angela Merkel's initial rejection of support for Athens may well have been motivated by the need not to alienate her coalition partner, the neoliberal Guido Westerwelle. The ideological issues involved are highly significant. The ratings agencies themselves gave major commercial banks top ratings just before those bodies collapsed in 2007-8. Finally, it must be remembered that other eurozone states and the international financial institutions may be acting as much out of ideological antipathy towards Greece's centre-left government as anything else. The IMF is notorious for ordering states to slash health and education spending as a precondition for loans. That would hit ordinary Greeks, among the worst paid workforces in the EU, very hard. Mr. Papandreou needs urgently to devise a workable and sustainable strategy to cope with these forces and factors. Republication or redissemination of the contents of this screen areexpressly prohibited without the written consent of The Hindu.

and then went on to Windows Phone 7 Series has now culminated in the MeeGo - a new Linux based platform that would be backed by erstwhile unrealistic partners Intel and Nokia.

Free Content Generation Tools

To tell the truth, the MeeGo (whoever thought of that name, we wonder) is nothing but a hybrid version of Nokia's Maemo OS and Intel's Moblin. This platform will be used to power smartphones of tomorrow and will also be powerful enough to be used on Netbooks. Like the parent Operating Systems, MeeGo too will be open source and obviously, Linux based. MeeGo will support ARM architecture and Intel's own Atom processors. MeeGo is an advanced OS that would be comfortable in various avatars. It can be full fledged desktop OS - if needed, can be scaled down to be an advanced Smartphone OS and can also be used on Tablets. While there are no screenshots or visual cues as to how MeeGo will eventual end up looking like, what we do know is that the first devices based on this platform would be available this very year, in late 2010. While most other OSes (except for the notable exception of Google's Chrome OS) try to concentrate on one platform - be it mobile, Internet tablets or netbooks and then diversify into offering versions for various platforms, MeeGo, right from the start, aims to be a one stop OS for all platforms. The source code and other details would be made available in the weeks to come. As of now, it is unclear if other brands apart from Nokia will also be using MeeGo to power their devices.

"Every Pakistani -- every patriotic Pakistani -- feels it in his heart and I also do that at this moment Pakistan is not doing too well," he said in an interview that aired on CNN's "Connect the World" on Monday. At first glance, there wouldn’t seem to be a lot of obvious upsides to Kevin Smith’s getting ejected from a Southwest Airlines flight for being too fat . Even if the director ranks among Twitter’s hottest trending topics, significantly goosing the number of media mentions for his new action-comedy, “Cop Out,” which hits theaters on Feb. 26.

But while the incident — and Smith’s subsequent Tweakout about the ordeal, dubbed “Fatgate” —  continues to generate headlines worldwide, it’s not the first time the “Clerks” writer-director has suffered an ignominious, weight-related embarrassment just days before theatrically releasing a new movie. In 2008, just before the roll-out of his under-performing romantic comedy “Zach and Miri Make a Porno,” Smith suffered a similar humiliation: He admitted that his self-described “morbid obesity” had been responsible for the destruction of a household appliance. And then, as now, he milked it for all it was worth on his blog and in interviews.

Non-governmental organisations have been celebrating ever since Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh announced a moratorium on the commercial use of Bt brinjal in India.

Click here for information about elastic straps and other related products.

Bt brinjal, a genetically modified vegetable, had been developed to make it resistant to attacks by the most common variety of pests, thereby raising prospects of its increased output without any associated costs usually incurred on pesticides. While most government scientists endorsed the genetically modified variety of the vegetable and even the Genetic Engineering and Appraisal Committee (GEAC), a government body, approved its use, several NGOs had voiced their concern over safety. In a remarkable display of strength and well-orchestrated campaigns, NGOs staged protest rallies across the country and made their views known to Ramesh at the many public hearings the minister held to review, the GEAC decision to allow commercial use of Bt brinjal. Views of most scientists from the Department of Biotechnology and the Indian Council of Agriculture Research were set aside. Also ignored were the views of the agriculture minister, the science and technology minister and the human resources development minister. Not surprisingly, therefore, NGOs are celebrating their victory in their battle against Bt brinjal. Ramesh’s decision to place a moratorium on commercialisation of Bt brinjal, they point out, is nothing but a step away from a ban on its use.

On the whole, Windows Update seems to work very well. Although I don't use Linux much, my experiences with Windows and Microsoft Update have been much more positive than those with equivalent software on Linux.

The last time I had significant problems with Windows Update, which occurred with multiple PCs, I used Microsoft's free tech support. Their problem submission system uploaded relevant files to them, a person looked them over and I soon given a workaround for the problem. All for free. No doubt you've heard by now that a recent Patch Tuesday "update" (a nicer term than bug fix)  rendered many Windows XP machines un-bootable. This question has been asked many times before in many different settings. It’s the mantra of Windows desktop devotees: “Linux is fine in the server room, but…” Normally, I wouldn’t even ask it myself. I’m quite a believer in Linux and a happy cheerleader for highly functional, free software in education (and anywhere else, for that matter). And yet… And yet, I’ve now built three Linux servers for school and one for home since the beginning of this year and they’re all working brilliantly. I’ve installed Ubuntu on a netbook that replaced one I passed along (after reinstalling Windows for the new user) and OpenSUSE Li-F-E on another desktop that I use regularly to test and demo Moodle. The servers handle important functions in our schools, particularly as web servers, print servers, and network storage. The PCs are just for me.

Article Content Generation

So why does all of this matter? Because nobody sees the advantages of Linux in the server room (they just know that they can print or view our website). But when I suggest that users struggling with software issues, malware, or instabilities on their machines start fresh with Ubuntu, their eyes generally glaze over after 15 seconds of me explaining just what Ubuntu is. I’m a pretty good explainer, too, so I don’t think it’s just me. When I talk about the hidden costs of Windows licensing on refurbished or donated computers and suggest that Linux would provide everything that most students and teachers need on these machines, I’m not getting much in the way of enthusiasm.

(02-13) 21:12 PST --The sport of surfing reached new heights at Mavericks on Saturday. In the end, it wasn't so much a contest as an elevated state of mind, a heady swirl of fear, respect and bravado among some of the best big-wave riders in the world. In the end, most everyone agreed, some history was made.

Information about underwear elastic manufacturer based in India.

From the locals to the Hawaiians to seasoned men on the judges' stand, the talk of the after-party centered around a powerful statement: These were the biggest waves ever for a paddle-surfing contest. South Africa's Chris Bertish took home the $50,000 first-prize check, but as he said, "It took all of us to make this happen. I cannot believe what we saw out there today, and how well it was surfed by everybody." It was one of those magical days in which everything came together. There were fears of a morning south wind, but the day dawned calm with finely groomed seas. The swell was even bigger than expected, reaching a formidable 22 feet at 17 seconds (the period between waves) on the Half Moon Bay buoy, translating into wave faces of 50 feet and beyond. The weather was sunny and warm, and only late in the day, with the arrival of a northwest wind, did the ocean take on a slightly unfavorable texture. Not a soul complained. What happened Saturday was the convergence of spectacular conditions, some money at stake, giant surf and 24 men who really wanted it. The wipeouts were brutal and frequent; at least a half-dozen surfers were either injured, dazed or rendered temporarily lifeless by interminable hold-downs. Rescue missions, via personal watercraft, were commonplace. Somehow, on one of the most challenging surf days ever seen anywhere, everyone escaped serious consequence.

Director Garry Marshall's "Valentine's Day" is both a celebration and examination of the complexities of love. With the aid of a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Jessica Alba, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway and others, "Valentine's Day" demonstrates just how blissful and confusing love can be at times — but many of these actors aren't just dealing with matters of the heart on the big screen. For many of them, love is a very deep (and often public) part of their own personal lives.

In "Valentine's Day," Ashton Kutcher plays Reed Bennett, a florist at the center of much of the film's passionate activity. Years ago, Kutcher himself filled a similar role, dating a variety of fellow actresses including January Jones and the late Brittany Murphy . But in early 2003, Kutcher made headlines when he started a relationship with Demi Moore, an actress 15 years older than the former "That 70's Show" star. While some were skeptical of the couple at the time, Kutcher and Moore have been happily married since 2005, proving their doubters wrong. Back in 2005, "Wedding Crashers" hit theaters and catapulted Bradley Cooper into the public eye. But even as the young actor worked tirelessly to establish himself as Hollywood's next leading man, Cooper found love with actress Jennifer Esposito. The two were married in December 2006, but it was a short-lived affair, as Esposito filed for divorce in April of the next year. Most recently, Cooper has been romantically linked to Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger.

It is a general perception that the sugar mill owners in Maharashtra gave ample donations to Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party during the Maharashtra Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. In return the NCP supremo made statements from time to time which resulted in the price of sugar going up from Rs 12 a kg to Rs 50 a kg. Being the Food minister, other foodgrain traders also provided financial aid to the party.

All sections of the society are perplexed as to why Pawar continued giving such statements even when there was no shortage of the sweetner. Both the Congress party and the Nationalist Congress Party have to extend hands for power both at the Centre and in Maharashtra. Pawar has been taking advantage of this compulsion whereas Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh kept mum. However, now things seem to be changing with the Union Cabinet contemplating to take away the Food department from Pawar. On Monday the Congress party said the mandate of controlling food prices lay with the agriculture and food ministries but added that inflation was the concern of the Central government too.

: The judgement day for the pest-resistant genetically modified Bt brinjal technology finally arrived on Tuesday. The minister for environment decided that Bt brinjal must wait longer before it can reach the Indian farmer—farmers are already struggling to grow brinjal, fighting what is often a losing battle with pests using huge quantities of pesticides. The technology, it seems, has been kept in cold storage, owing more to mass frenzy than scientific reasons. The basic science is clear—the insertion of Cry1Ac gene of the soil bacterium bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to the genome of brinjal will be expressed when bitten and ingested by the target pest. The pest dies not by the toxicity of the Bt but by the gum-like action of the ingested Bt that chokes the worm to death.

Diesel Tanks India

The process of getting Bt brinjal to farms had progressed quite far. The inventors of the technology had already given it out to public sector universities for the development of select varieties in different regions of the country. The final approval for public release had been given by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), a top-notch scientific body. But the power to finally release Bt brinjal for commercial cultivation was given to the government, and the government has unfortunately decided to stop it. Some of the political parties had called for Prime Minister’s intervention to ban Bt brinjal. A public interest litigation has been filed in the Madras High Court against GEAC’s approval for the release of Bt brinjal. Over ten state governments, ruled by the entire spectrum of political parties, recently banned it without even waiting for the Centre’s decision.

The filing of the charges capped an investigation that revealed Mr. Jackson’s heavy reliance on narcotics, including propofol, an anesthetic normally used in surgery but administered to Mr. Jackson, 50, as a sleep aid. The doctor, Conrad Murray , a cardiologist with offices in Houston and Las Vegas, had acknowledged giving Mr. Jackson the drug shortly before the singer was found unconscious on June 25 in a rented mansion here, according to police affidavits. The coroner determined that Mr. Jackson had died from “acute propofol intoxication,” combined with other sedatives.

Entertainment Weekly ) -- Romance proved to be a powerful foe for the epic "Avatar," which has dominated the box office for the last seven weekends. The Lasse Hallstrom-directed romantic drama "Dear John" won the weekend in a big way, grossing an estimated $32.4 million and setting a record for the highest-grossing Superbowl Sunday frame in history. "Avatar" fell to second place for the first time, dropping a still scant 25 percent to $23.6 million. The James Cameron film has now out-grossed every movie in the history of cinema (as long as we don't adjust for inflation) with a domestic take of an astounding $630 million.

“No one cared about the code, so it was removed,” writes Kroah-Hartman. “As I’ve stated before, code in the staging tree needs to be worked on to be merged to the main kernel tree, or it will be deleted.” But the larger problem, he continues, is that Android uses a new lock type, new hooks for its “sometimes bizarre” security model, and a revamped framebuffer driver infrastructure. All this, he says, prevents “a large chunk” of Android drivers and platform code from merging into the main kernel tree.

Free Automated Content Generation Software

Kroah has a ton of great things to say about Google and Android. The removal of Android from the Linux Kernel isn’t the end of the world, but more an admittance that Android is paving its own path. If Google doesn’t alter directions now to account for this, it’ll probably be too late to turn back. What does Google have to gain? Because Google doesn’t have their code merged into the mainline, these companies creating drivers and platform code are locked out from ever contributing it back to the kernel community. The kernel community has for years been telling these companies to get their code merged, so that they can take advantage of the security fixes, and handle the rapid API churn automatically. And these companies have listened, as is shown by the larger number of companies contributing to the kernel every release.

Like all banalities, the familiar dictum contains an obvious truth. To be politically effective, you have to be able to distinguish between your desires and realities on the ground, between aspirations and resources. But like most banalities, it begs more questions than it answers. How is “the possible” defined? Where are its limits drawn? Who draws them? Theoretically, the possible is an elastic and speculative category. But the dictum draws no distinctions between the immediately unlikely and the ultimately impossible, takes no notice of the infinite and shifting gradations between them, and of the impact of human agency in shifting an outcome from one category to another.

By now, she’s even patented a look she whips out at award shows, concerts and more, when her innocence is threatened by acclaim: eyes wide, mouth agape, hand held over it as if to keep in the breath she’d just gasped as if it were her last. Most stars — and make no mistake, Ms. Swift is the most important new pop star of the past few years — have their images undone by failure. In Ms. Swift’s case, the opposite is true: success has necessitated a re-evaluation.
