The move comes just days before full details of MPs' earnings outside Westminster are revealed on July 1. Mr Milburn, a close ally of Tony Blair who was once tipped as a potential Prime Minister, is expected to be one of Labour's biggest earners, with jobs netting him more than £100,000 a year, on top of his MP's pay of £64,766.

The Darlington MP said: "I am very proud to have served as the town's MP since 1992. "That feels like a long time in modern politics." Mr Milburn - who has had a stormy relationship with Gordon Brown, but decided against challenging the PM for his job, left frontline politics in 2003 to spend more time with his family.
