The rarest of the rare is where there is no defeat. The great historic event is when two giant neighbours face each other to fight but with oblivion to hostility. Play with friendly balls and smiling wickets with both captains holding aloft the V-sign since neither loses and both win fraternity before the first ball of friendly felicity is thrown and the two prime ministers greet with joy wishing the two nations back their lost integrity and wonder of mutual victory.

If Pakistan wins, it was yesterday’s India. If India wins it is young brother of yesterday’s Bharat. Kerala and Karachi are twins, a political comity and geo-integrity. I congratulate both the captains. You achieve without guns what two comrades and prime ministers could not — a V-sign simultaneous as the last ball is thrown and the last wicket slumps with triumph for both. Indo-Pak Jai Ho! Operation Mohali Project. Glory for SAARC. Hindu, Muslim Ek Ho! A great friendly Pakistan is India’s pride and a brave new Bharat is Pakistan’s cherished defence.

Cricket is not politics. But is of nobler mettle. The great game with ball and wicket will have a great global message if only cricket is not corrupted by mercenary elements. Cricket is not gambling but artistry at its finest on the turf. A G Gardner is the excellent exponent of the wonder of cricket in his article on ‘The Jam Sahib of Nawanagar.’ Let me now speak through Gardner’s language: “The last ball has been bowled, the bats have been oiled and put away, and around Lord’s the grand stands are deserted and forlorn. We have said farewell to cricket. We have said farewell, too, to cricket’s king. The game will come again with the spring and the new grass and the burgeoning trees. But the king will come no more. For the Jam Sahib is forty, and, alas, the Jam Sahib is fat. And the temple bells are calling him back to his princely duties amid the sunshine, and the palm trees, and the spicy garlic smells of Nawanagar. No more shall we see him tripping down the pavilion steps, his face wreathed in chubby smiles; no more shall we sit in the jolly sunshine through the livelong day and watch his incomparable art till the evening shadows fall athwart the greensward and send us home content. The well-graced actor leaves the stage and becomes only a memory in a world of happy memories. And so “hats off” to the Jam Sahib — the prince of a little State, but the king of a great game.
