MYSORE: Veteran politician M S Gurupadaswamy who died in Bangalore on Tuesday had the distinction of being closely associated with most prime ministers right from Jawaharalal Nehru to Atal Bihari Vajpayee .

Born in an agricultural family in T Narsipur taluk he joined the freedom struggle when he was 20 years. He tried his hand at journalism before entering Lok Sabha in 1952. He was the editor of then popular Kannada weekly Prajamatha from 1947 to 1953 . Gurupadswamy sparng a surprise when in the first general elections in 1952 he defeated a senior Congressman and then minister of state H C Dasappa who was known as Mysore Gandhi.
