Nehru was the prime minister from 1947 to 1964 and it can be said of Nehru that after creating India, he set about creating Indians cast in his own image as modern, secular, scientific and socialist-minded individuals. Nehru had ushered the newborn country and its economy into the world. During his tenure as prime minister, Nehru drew a blue-print of a socialist economy and formed five-year-plans, a centralised Planning Commission and industrialisation. Brick-by-brick he laid the foundation of a progressive nation with heavy industries, steel mills, large dams and nuclear reactors. Independent foreign policy was another milestone of Nehru's administration and helped him emerge as a third world leader with his non-alignment policy.
