JAIPUR: Ananya Soral, a Rajasthan University (RU) student, was excited when she first realised that the student union elections were being held after a long gap. She thought she would be voting for someone concerned about genuine student issues at the RU and its affiliated colleges. Her excitement was, however, short-lived. "I am shocked to find that even these elections are being contested on caste lines," remarked Ananya, expressing her bewilderment over "caste politics" being candidly discussed at the Rajasthan University Student Union (RUSU) elections.
Even as prestigious academic institutions like the Delhi University (DU) or the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have remained free of caste politics, ex-students of the RU recollect that caste' has been playing a role in the RUSU elections since the early 1970s. Earlier it was in the form of groupism, though.

This wasn't strictly caste-based as the Rajput group had members from different communities, mainly from the urban areas. The Jat group had just the Jats, who were from the rural areas," said advocate Vimal Chaudhary, who was RUSU president during 1973-74.Here 'caste politics' rules the roost - Times of India
