How Judiciary Shaped Politics in 2009 - THISDAY

The Nigerian Judiciary has tried its best in redressing many illegalities and injustices in the outgoing year, 2009.  Examples of such illegalities include various petitions that arose from the disputed 2007 general election. However, with the way some of the petitions were resolved, the judiciary has done something remarkable, more importantly, in sanitizing and standardizing future elections. It has also by its rulings, affirmed the will of the electoral populace.

 Some of the landmark judicial pronouncements are Mimiko’s Victory over Agagu The Ondo State governorship legal tussle between Dr Olusegun Agagu and Dr. Olusegun Mimiko culminated in the final nullification of Agagu's election by the Court of Appeal in Benin City, on February 23, 2009 .  While Agagu contested and declared the winner under the banner of  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mimiko contested under the umbrella of the  Labour Party (LP).
