Karunanidhi has second thoughts on retirement - Indian Express

Days after hinting that he was retiring from politics after the proposed Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore in June next year, Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi seems to have had a change of heart.

“Wait till the conference ends. We have six months time. We will consider both the views (retiring and staying put),” Karunanidhi, 85, said when asked about remarks made by some DMK leaders that he should not quit politics and if he does, Deputy CM Stalin should succeed him. Stalin had on Monday said he hoped his father would “reconsider quitting active politics”. Meanwhile, reacting to External Affairs Minister S M Krishna’s remarks that the issue of Katchatheevu island, ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974, was a closed chapter, Karunanidhi said Indian pilgrims and fishermen were “assured of rights but the Lankan government took them away at a later stage”.”The need of the hour is to protect the rights of Tamils in Kachatheevu,” he said.
