By the time the meeting ended on a cold Delhi December night, there was little consensus between the Congress and the chief opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party on the proposed Lokpal Bill. But there were convergences between the BJP and the main Left party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), indicating a Left-Right gang-up in Parliament.

In fact, there were greater differences between the CPI(M) and its mother party, the Communist Party of India (CPI), than between the CPI(M) and the BJP, for example on the question of including millions of lower-class employees within the ambit of the Lokpal. Both the CPI(M) and the BJP want these employees included, a move opposed by the CPI with equal determination. All three parties have wanted to include the prime minister under the Lokpal, a move that was earlier fiercely opposed by the government, although now it seems to have conceded the possibility, except under some conditions of national security, defense and foreign affairs.
