New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to a Dalit village on the India-Nepal border sparked off a fresh controversy, with the Uttar Pradesh government complaining that the local police was not informed about his visit.

Uttar Pradesh home secretary Mahesh Kumar Gupta said In Lucknow that the government would write to the center raising objections “over the way in which Gandhi conducted a tour of the state without prior information to the state government.” Denying that the Uttar Pradesh government was kept in dark about his visits in the state, Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said the the Uttar Pradesh government’s objections were due to “political insecurity.” “The SPG (Special Protection Group) was informed well in advance regarding his programmes. Other formalities will be followed. It is thereafter the state government’s responsibility (to ensure the security of Gandhi),” Natarajan said in New Delhi. Gandhi, who was on a surprise visit to the state on Wednesday, visited Ram Nagar area in Barabanki district and then to Chutkaideh village in Shravasti district, to spend the night in the house of a Dalit gram pradhan (village council head) Chedi Pasi.
