THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two days before Friday night’s stampede that took the lives of 102 pilgrims to the Sabarimala shrine in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, an elephant herd in the area had trumpeted a reminder to all authorities concerned.

Frightened pilgrims ran for their lives, and some of them were left bleeding, but the message was clear: religion , politics and commerce were at loggerheads and making a deadly cocktail in the environmentally-fragile Sabarimala area that happens to straddle the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Friday’s stampede happened at Pullumedu, close to the Mount Plateau, an area that is noted for the highest density of tiger population within the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR), said a senior forest department official. There was, of course, little chance of a tiger pouncing on the crowd, given the shy nature of the animal, but forest department officials are concerned about the impact that the pilgrimage involving such large numbers is causing to the animal sanctuary.
