In the midst of this week's frenetic political activity came the sad news that the industrialist and philanthropist Sir Allen McClay had died.
Allen McClay - he wore his title so lightly that he often quipped that he looked behind him every time someone said "Sir" to see who was there - built Northern Ireland's first billion-pound company, sold it, then built another bigger than the first. He set up in business on the eve of the Troubles and defied the odds to build a global company that employs thousands in operations in Craigavon and the United States. His friend Sir George Bain said Allen McClay was an Ulster giant in the tradition of people like Dunlop and Ferguson.
