When local journalist Colin Bateman penned his first novel in 1992, the term "Peace Process" had yet to be coined.
In Divorcing Jack, Bateman imagines an Alliance Party leader bringing a form of peace to Northern Ireland by persuading the wider public onto the middle ground of politics. The novel is satirical and outrageous, but like all good satire it depends upon key underlying truths and realities. Still, an Alliance Party first minister? It may seem too unrealistic today (apologies to David Ford), but it made absolute sense - in a satirical way - back in 1992.
