Any legal action taken in Australia against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will not be driven by political motives, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd says.

Asked if Mr Assange's website WikiLeaks should be shut down for disseminating secret US cables, Mr Rudd said it was a question of law. "We are a nation of laws, and in a nation of laws we first wait for the advice from the AFP (Australian Federal Police) ... a decision taken by public prosecutors, and third a determination by Australian courts," he told reporters in Brisbane on Wednesday. Mr Assange has been denied bail in a London court following his arrest in Britain on a Swedish warrant for suspected sex crimes, charges he denies.
