A Member of Parliament (MP) lost his membership of the Delhi Golf Club when he resigned from one political party to join another. His argument that he was still an MP, as the party he joined also elected him to Rajya Sabha, did not win the favour of judges.

The Delhi High Court dismissed his petition and, in a recent order, refused to grant any relief to BSP MP Akhilesh Das Gupta with respect to renewing his membership or ordering the club to grant him a new one. The story began in May 2008 when Gupta, a three-time MP who was also Minister of State (Steel) between 2006-08 in the Union Council of Ministers, relinquished his membership from Congress and joined the BSP.
