When Bigg Boss’s new inmate Shakti Kapoor starts trending or being the topic of discussion on Twitter, overtaking Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birth anniversary, one knows that the popularity of the show is still intact. The biggest franchise of Colors, Bigg Boss, this year in its fifth season, has the same pattern as its previous season: a motley group of 14 thrown in together, forced to coexist and perform various tasks over a period of 90 days, with 32 cameras capturing each move they make.

The house, with a hall, two bedrooms, a kitchen, pool and a gym area is very tastefully done like always. What’s different this time? The only male contestant, Shakti Kapoor, an actor with a wild reputation, has moved to the Bigg Boss house with 13 women, including a pregnant wrestler and a transgender activist. Like in all fictional shows on Indian television, women power rules this house as well. Salman Khan aka Bhaijaan and Sanjay Dutt aka Baba—the hosts of the show—rightly put it, when they pointed out to the kitchen and said, “Iss ghar main saare fasaad ki jad yehi hai (this is the root of all problems)”.

The show, which has formerly made celebrities out of Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan, Veena Malik and Dolly Bindra is, this time, banking on curiosity. Bigg Boss has always thrived on inmates with a controversial pasts: for instance, politician Sanjay Nirupam, actor Ashmit Patel, famous for his MMS scandal, Bhojpuri actor Raja Chaudhury, who allegedly beat up his wife Shweta Tiwari, and Abbas Kazmi, Ajmal Kasab’s lawyer. But looks like the crazy bunch just got crazier this time with every contestant having an interesting back story. It is a deliberate strategy, as an insider from the channel reveals, “We were toying with the change in format and the idea of getting just one man and 13 women was unanimously liked by our team.” ... contd.
