WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top White House aide said on Sunday the U.S. security system needed to be strengthened after the attempted bombing on Christmas Day of a Detroit-bound plane but played down the need for a sweeping overhaul. John Brennan, a senior White House adviser on counterterrorism, said there was no single "smoking gun" that would have tipped off authorities to the plot. U.S. business group accuses Obama of shorting Taiwan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of a prominent U.S. business group accused President Barack Obama of compromising Taiwan's security to promote U.S. ties with China. Self-ruled Taiwan, which China deems a wayward province, is watching "with increased exasperation," said Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council.
