In opening remarks to a jury of six women and six men, Travis County prosecutor Beverly Mathews said DeLay conspired to launder "dirty" corporate money into donations to candidates, a violation of Texas law. She said that the exchange was part of DeLay's "larger, clever scheme" to change the face of the state's representation in Congress. At the heart of the case is one transaction: DeLay's political committee in Texas sent $190,000 to the Republican National Committee, which donated the same amount in noncorporate money to seven Texas candidates supported by DeLay.
