Several Marathi writers at the Vishwa Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Dubai, which concluded on Saturday, feel substantial measures are needed to promote Marathi rather than the debate on peripheral issues aimed at political ends.

They said instead of indulging in politics of Marathi, solving problems of those Maharashtrians who are in poverty, promoting Marathi medium schools, setting up libraries in villages, encouraging authors who write on social issues, setting up a separate Marathi university and translating works from other languages into Marathi and vice-versa were needed. Author Dr Anil Awachat said solving problems of the poor, downtrodden and working class was more important than the exposition of linguistic pride by parties like the MNS. “Language is important but not more than people’s hunger or their dignity,” Awachat, known for writing on social issues, said.
