Hundreds take Polar Bear plunge - MSNBC

You heard that word again and again Thursday at One-Mile Recreation Area, where hundreds of swimmers braved the chilly waters of Big Chico Creek.

The annual Polar Bear Swim on New Year's Day is a Chico tradition. The unofficial event (it's said no agency will sponsor it for fear of the potential liability) is held each year on Jan. 1 at one second past 1 p.m. By 12:30 p.m. Thursday, dozens of people, bundled up in sweatshirts or jackets, milled about the pavement on either side of Sycamore Pool. And the crowd steadily grew until hundreds of people lined the pool and packed the bridge.
