Rather than getting ready for her job waiting tables on Saturday, the 24-year-old from La Honda was sporting a feather boa in the tricolor of the Irish flag with a beer in her hand as San Francisco's St. Patrick's Day Parade ambled by under bluebird skies.

"I got off work for this," Olsen beamed, red hair flowing from under a shamrock cap as she and a cluster of friends lined the patio at the Market Street restaurant Show Dogs. "I'm die-hard Irish." Seemingly everyone had a touch of the Emerald Isle in them as thousands of people flocked to a parade and festival billed as the largest Irish event west of the Mississippi.

Organizers estimated the turnout at more than 100,000, and people were lined four or five deep in places along Market Street as bagpipe corps, dance troupes and a pack of Irish wolfhounds and their owners made their way to Civic Center Plaza, where Mayor Gavin Newsom sat in shirt sleeves on the reviewing stand hailing the participants. Even the sheet-metal workers union and police bomb squad vehicle took part.
