"As a movie, I thought it would be interesting to humanize a guy who fired people for a living," Reitman said during a recent interview, recalling that he first picked up the book (in an airport, fittingly) while playing the hurry-up-and-wait game in anticipation of "Thank You For Smoking." When he returned to his "Up in the Air" script a year or so later, he said, everything had changed. "I was married, I was a dad. What had started out as a book that I wanted to adapt as a pretty straight-forward corporate satire had changed into a movie about a guy searching for what, and who, he wants in his life." We chatted with the 32-year-old Reitman during a Chicago stopover on a whirlwind promotional tour that had him up in the air more days than not.
