“The first one I showed was ‘Laura,’ ” Scorsese said of the classic 1944 Manhattan murder mystery starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews.

“I felt Leo (DiCaprio) and Mark (Ruffalo) could study Dana Andrews, his body language. He’s the war-torn vet who doesn’t look anyone in the eye when he speaks to them and falls in love with the ghost of the murdered Laura.” They also saw “Out of the Past” “for the mystery,” “I Walked with a Zombie” for the mood, “Shock Corridor” and “Crossfire,” another murder mystery with World War II vets. Scorsese knew he had to make “Shutter Island” even before he read Dennis Lehane’s best-selling thriller. He was first intrigued by Laeta Kalogridis’ screenplay adaptation.
