The irrepressible Hackintoshers that earlier this month were pronounced bleedin' demised, only to respond with a Pythonesque "I'm not dead yet!" cry of defiance, have reemerged with a new business model: T-shirts and Linux boxes.

Web Development

Mid-month, Florida's Psystar was slapped with an injunction by the US District Court for the Northern District of California that forbade the company from selling copies of either Mac OS X or any software that would enable said OS to run on non-Apple computers. That would seem to include Psystar's boot-loading Rebel EFI utility. However, in a recent post to their company's website the Hackintoshers told their undoubtedly dwindling fan base that they had "voluntarily suspended" their Rebel EFI sales while they ask the court for clarification on whether or not they can resume offering it.

Apple cloner switches to Linux - Inquirer

THE DODGY UPSTART that made a name for itself flogging Apple clones has abandoned the practice in favour of the safer practice of making Linux boxes instead.

Content Generation Tools

The fact that Jobs' Mob sued Psystar into a coma was probably the main motivation for its sudden change of business model. Just before Christmas , Psystar indefinitely suspended sales of its only product, a $50 utility called Rebel EFI that let customers install Apple's Snow Leopard operating system on generic Intel-based computers. It said sales of Rebel EFI were "voluntarily suspended" while the company sought clarification from the courts about whether the software is legal.

Earlier this month, Psystar suspended all sales of its hardware products, honouring the court's decision which favoured Apple. This week, Psystar has also temporarily halted sales of Rebel EFI while the former clone maker confirms the tool's legality with the court. Psystar also announced it will continue hardware sales in the coming days - with Linux rather than Mac OS X.

Web Development India

It's obviously hard to disagree with this notion, but it's also obvious that Psystar has not done a very good job of fighting for our rights as consumers. On top of that, there is still this pesky but very important issue of where Psystar got the code for Rebel EFI from - the company claims it has been developed in-house, but Netkas and others in the OSx86 community believe the code has been stolen from them. The company is not planning on throwing in the towel, though. If the court agrees that Rebel EFI does not fall under the injunction, Psystar will continue selling it, and expand it to include support for specific computers, such as the Dell 9 Mini and HP Mini.

There are a number of operating systems out there, choosing the right one is often difficult as each has their own unique qualities. When it comes to value and performance, none can match Ubuntu Linux. To show you just how good this OS is, Cnet News decided to run a little test, by running World of Warcraft.

Free Article Content Generation

When we say value, you cannot get any better than free. The operating system is offered free from developers’ Web sites, allowing you to install the software on as many computers as you wish. To put the OS to the test, Cnet thought that they would run one of the most popular installed Windows programs, WoW. The whole process took under an hour to do, which started with downloading the latest version of Ubuntu, 91.0. Installing the OS is said to be very similar to Windows, so you have to burn a copy on to a CD and then boot the install from the disc. The installer will do all the hard work for you; just remember to choose how much hard drive space you want Linux to use.

First of all, it's free. Most Linux distributions can be downloaded gratis from the developers' Web site and you can install it on however many computers you want. Secondly, it comes with a lot of things, such as office tools (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation), audio and video playback, Internet and e-mail, instant messaging, and so on. Basically everything a general user would want to use with a computer is there when the installation is done. For those applications that are not there, chances are you can download them for free. Red Hat is dropping support for Intel's Itanium processor in Enterprise Linux 6, the next major release of its operating system, the company said in a statement on Sunday. Dropping support for Itanium makes economic sense for Red Hat, according to Chris Ingle, research director for IDC's European Systems Group. The number of Itanium-based servers sold is likely not high enough for Red Hat to justify spending its resources on supporting a version of Enterprise Linux for this processor. Instead it will focus on support for x86-based servers, Ingle said.

But even on larger notebooks and laptops, if you make a lot of use of USB ports, you might be happy to recover one by using a Bluetooth mouse. - Mobile Phone: This is another common use. IBM has been selling Linux on mainframes for years. In fact, it's the adoption of Linux by some 1,300 customers that has helped prop up the mainframe business over the past nine years. As of today, 3,000 of the 6,300 unique third party applications that are available on the mainframe platform run atop Linux and IBM says that third quarter MIPS shipments for Linux-based mainframe engines was more than double that of the third quarter two years ago. (The mainframe business nonetheless had a 26 per cent revenue decline in the third quarter of this year, and the aggregate MIPS capacity shipped fell by 20 percent. It takes a lot of cheap Linux MIPS to make up for expensive z/OS MIPS).

Enterprise MRG was launched as an idea in December 2007 in the wake of Novell's roll-out of its SUSE Linux Enterprise Real-Time variant of its SLES server Linux distro a month earlier. The initial 1.0 release, which was missing the Project Condor grid components, debuted in June 2008. It did have the real-time Linux kernel, which is important for military systems, financial trading systems, and other industrial controllers where you have to strip down the general purpose Linux kernel and make it provide a more consistent response time (with low latency) on transactions. The Enterprise MRG stack also weaved in the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP), an open source and standard message queuing stack akin to the messaging server brokers such as IBM's WebSphere MQ, Microsoft's Message Queuing Middleware, Tibco's Rendezvous financial transaction messaging, and the Java Messaging Service.

J.A. Watson One of the few things which still require me to use Windows is my personal financial management program - I have been a Quicken user for a very long time. I used to be very conscientious about entering my transactions more or less daily into Quicken, but as I boot Windows less and less frequently, it has now gotten down to somewhere between weekly and monthly. Add to that the fact that a new year is approaching, which can be a good time (or a good excuse) to start with a new financial program, and the fact that I am tired of trying to figure out each year what new versions of Quicken have appeared and/or disappeared (Basic, Deluxe, Super-Duper Deluxe, with extra vitamins and minerals, automatic psychic detection of transfers, or whatever). This seems like a good time to reconsider the alternatives available for Linux, so I spent some time looking at a few of the possibilities. What follows here is a "first impression" summary of the four programs I installed and tried. All that I have tried to do so far is transfer the data from Quicken, and then do enough basic set up to be able to get a feel for how the program will work, what it will look like, and how it will handle come common transactions.

I think it would be in Nokia’s best interest to offer a diversified line of handsets which offer a variety of operating systems including Linux, Symbian, and even Android. In regards to next year, Nokia is really missing an opportunity to expand adoption of Linux Maemo. They can do better than just offering one phone with it for 2010.

With RedHawk Linux 5.4, announced Tuesday, Concurrent is slipping into Linux 2.6.31 and offering full compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 update 4. That's because RedHawk is a tweak on Red Hat, adding real-time extensions and other goodies cooked up by Concurrent to make it different from Red Hat's own Enterprise MRG real-time Linux. With this update, RedHawk Linux is able to take advantage of all the power management and virtualization features of the latest enhancements to Intel's Xeon 3400, 3500, and 5500 processors, which sport the QuickPath Interconnect, as well as the most-current six-core Opteron 8400s and their HyperTransport interconnect. The real-time Linux from Concurrent is also updated for new chipsets from Intel and AMD, and provides support for PCI-Express 2.0 peripherals.

Dell offers a nice selection of PCs running Ubuntu Linux . What Dell hasn't done though is come out and announce that they were working on Google's beta Chrome OS . Other vendors, such as Acer, HP and Lenovo are on board with Chrome. Regardless of that, Dell is actually the first big-time vendor to have released a version of Chrome OS designed to work with one of their netbooks.

This isn't an official beta though. No, this is a skunkworks project. In a Dell blog posting Dell technology strategist Doug Anson revealed that he and some of his work friends decided to try to get Chrome OS running on a Dell Mini 10v netbook . They were successful. Sort of. You can see for yourself. Anson wrote, "I have released an USB key image file to: http://linux.dell.com/files/cto. The file name is: "ChromiumOS_Mini10v_Nov25.img." It contains a functioning image of my USB key loaded with ChromiumOS. In addition, I have made a best effort attempt to get the Broadcom Wi-Fi adapter working in this image. It's definitely not perfect (read: highly experimental, untested, unstable, yada yada...) but it does appear to function." That Dell is working with Chrome OS shouldn't be much of a surprise.
