Google may have stolen code from Linux to use in its Android operating system, violating licenses that could lead to a lawsuit from the open-source owner Oracle.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet giant took a key part of its core programming tools, called the "Bionic Library," from Linux, according Edward Naughton, a partner at the international law firm Brown Rudnick. Those tools help app developers access essential functions to access the platform.

Naughton claims that Google essentially copied hundreds of files of Linux code, and then proceeded to "clean" those files to remove any trace of their origins, declaring it free of GNU licenses. Developers have been using it freely without the threat of copyright infringement.
