Nokia and Intel announced an open-sourced, Linux-based platform called MeeGo aimed at smartphones, netbooks and other communications devices. MeeGo will merge with the Linux-based Maemo platform Nokia uses on its own N900 smartphone. The new platform is expected to launch in the second quarter. MeeGo won't replace the Symbian platform, Nokia said, but will use Symbian on lower-end devices.
