Nokia does not seem to have any desire to win over analysts or consumers next year by expanding their lineup of Linux powered devices. According to Reuters, a source for the mobile phone manufacturer has stated that the company plans to only have one phone offered with the Linux-based Maemo OS. Nokia’s first handset to be powered by Linux was its N900 .

The plan to have only one handset with Linux Maemo flies in the face of reported plans that Nokia was ditching the Symbian OS on its N-series handsets by 2012. Clearly it seems that Nokia is not ready to take Symbian off of life support just yet. It is really no wonder since Symbian is fully owned by Nokia . I think it would be in Nokia’s best interest to offer a diversified line of handsets which offer a variety of operating systems including Linux, Symbian, and even Android. In regards to next year, Nokia is really missing an opportunity to expand adoption of Linux Maemo. They can do better than just offering one phone with it for 2010.
