Jim Lynch Canonical has just released a beta version of Ubuntu Linux 9.04. In keeping with past traditions, the new version has a cute nickname based on an animal (a mythical one, in this case): Jaunty Jackelope. You'll find a number of new features and upgrages: Linux Kernel 2.6.28, Gnome 2.26 (which improves handling of multiple monitors), X.Org Server 1.6, a less-intrusive desktop notification system, better boot performance, and Ext4 file system support (Ext3 is still the default, though). Installation, as you'd expect from Ubuntu, is quite easy and quick, and in my testing, the OS ran smoothly. As with any beta, though, I'd strongly advise against using it on a production machine.
